Labrador Rescue Dog Becomes Hero After Foiling Late-Night Assault

GREENWOOD, July 13, 2025 — Luna, a two-year-old Labrador mix adopted from the Greenwood Animal Shelter just weeks ago, leapt into action late Thursday evening when her owner, 28-year-old Sarah Johnson, was accosted by an unknown assailant on Maple Avenue. Johnson, who had paused to check her phone en route home, was approached from behind. Before she could cry out, Luna burst forward, barking fiercely and biting the attacker’s leg, forcing him to retreat into the darkness.

Johnson sustained a fractured collarbone and facial bruises in the scuffle and was treated and released from Greenwood General Hospital early Friday morning. “She risked everything for me,” said Johnson, her right arm in a sling. “Luna was trembling that day when we first brought her home. Now she’s my guardian angel.”

Luna’s rapid transformation from timid rescue to courageous protector has drawn praise from local authorities and animal-welfare advocates alike. Greenwood Police Chief Marcus Reyes commended the dog’s bravery: “Luna’s intervention undoubtedly prevented more serious harm. We are actively investigating the incident and urge anyone with information to come forward.”

At the Greenwood Animal Shelter, staff celebrated news of Luna’s heroics. Shelter manager Karen Mills reflected on Luna’s journey: “When she arrived, Luna was skittish and reserved. Seeing her defend Sarah with such determination shows just how quickly rescued dogs can blossom with love and trust.”

As Johnson recuperates at home, Luna remains ever vigilant at her side. Neighbors report seeing the pair on gentle walks each morning, Luna’s tail held high. For Johnson, every wag is a reminder that hope—and heroism—can come in the smallest, furriest packages.
