Farewell, Tiana: Beloved Donkey of Freedom Hill Sanctuary Passes Away on Caretaker’s Birthday
Freedom Hill Sanctuary is in mourning today after the unexpected loss of one of its most cherished residents. Tiana, a spirited and gentle donkey known for her loyalty and mischief, passed away this morning after a sudden diagnosis of liver cancer. She was surrounded by those who loved her deeply.
The morning began like any other—but it quickly became clear something was wrong. Tiana, usually eager and cheeky, stood still, refusing her breakfast. Caretakers noticed her unusual behavior and called a veterinarian, hoping for a minor illness. Instead, they received devastating news: an inoperable mass in her liver. There was nothing that could be done.
Heartbreakingly, the loss came on the birthday of one of her primary caregivers, who had spent the previous evening wishing for the recovery of another animal under their care.
Tiana arrived at the sanctuary after her beloved human, Faye, moved into aged care. Until Faye’s passing, she received regular updates, always ending with reassurance: “Tiana’s doing just fine.” And she was.
Though initially uncertain about her new herd mates, Eeyore and May, Tiana’s persistent and gentle spirit won them over. She became an integral part of the sanctuary family, known for her joyful mealtime spins, fierce food protection, and insistence on being brushed first.
Her nurturing side shone through when baby Annie was born. Tiana watched over the foal with quiet devotion, proving herself both protective and tender.
Tiana’s death has left a profound void. “Her absence is louder than her silence ever was,” one caretaker shared. “She knew she was safe. She knew she was loved.”
Today, the staff and supporters of Freedom Hill say goodbye to more than just an animal—they say goodbye to family.
Tiana will forever be a part of the sanctuary, her memory etched in every quiet corner she once roamed.
Rest in peace, sweet girl. You were loved beyond words.
