Seaweed the Gardening Dog: How One Clever Pup Helped Find Not One, But Two Irrigation Leaks

Seaweed the Gardening Dog: How One Clever Pup Helped Find Not One, But Two Irrigation Leaks

At first, it was just a running joke: Seaweed loves coming to work. Her owner, a professional gardener, would come home and joke about all the “jobs” Seaweed did on site. But one day, Seaweed decided to take her work a little more seriously—and surprised everyone.

While investigating a leak in an irrigation system, her owner faced the usual challenges. With no water visible and the wind making it impossible to hear any signs of a leak, the next step was dreaded: digging everything out from the start.

Meanwhile, Seaweed was off doing what she loves—sniffing around for gophers. Her owner started playing with her, encouraging her to get excited and “find” anything unusual in the lawn.

Then it happened.

Seaweed walked to a spot in the grass and just stared. Something about her stillness said, “Right here.” When her owner checked—sure enough, there it was. The leak. Hidden 4 inches below the sod. The discovery was met with celebration: praise, belly rubs, and an absolutely delighted dog.

But the job wasn’t over.

After fixing the leak and running the system again, nothing happened. That could only mean one thing—another leak. Frustrated, her owner turned the system back on and started scanning the lawn again.

Then Seaweed trotted over to an entirely different area, pawed at a puddle, and stared.

She found the second leak.

“She totally gets it,” her owner said. “She got a piece of my salmon dinner that night.”

Seaweed may have started as a workplace sidekick, but she’s proven herself a valuable member of the landscaping team. And while she didn’t ask for a paycheck, she’ll happily accept payment in praise, pets, and a few bites of salmon.

Thanks, Seaweed—you really dug deep for the team.
