Hello… A Bat’s Plea for Understanding

Hello. It’s me, a bat. I know what you’re thinking. I’m a creature of the night, often misunderstood. But I want to tell you a little bit about myself, and about why I might accidentally find my way into your world.
First off, let’s clear the air. I don’t suck blood, and I’m definitely not trying to get stuck in your hair. Honestly, my navigation system is much better than that! I’m a shy creature, and my goal is to stay far away from you.
But sometimes, accidents happen.
If I accidentally fly into your house, please don’t panic. And please, please don’t hit me with sticks or brooms. It really hurts, and I get very scared. I promise, I didn’t mean to scare you—it was just a simple mistake. I got a little lost and saw a light.
If I land somewhere and can’t take off again, I might need a little help. It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but sometimes my little wings just can’t get the lift they need from a flat surface. All I need is a little kindness. Just use a towel to gently guide me outside, and I’ll fly away right away, I promise. There’s no need for force.
You might not know this, but I’m actually a friend. I eat mosquitoes and many other insects, helping your home stay safe and bug-free. We bats work hard to keep the insect population in check.
Our world is getting smaller. Our natural shelters—the old trees and quiet caves—are being destroyed to make way for new buildings, so we have fewer and fewer safe places to live. When I fly into your home, it’s often a sign that I’m just looking for a safe space in a changing world.
So, if you see me fluttering around your living room, here’s my best advice:
- Turn off all the lights inside the house.
- Leave the outside light on.
- Open a door or a window wide.
I’ll see that clear path to the light and be out of your hair in a heartbeat.
Be kind, be human. I’m just trying to survive and find my way. I want to live too.
