Lakeview, July 14, 2025 — When Officer Mark Daniels received an urgent dispatch about a car sinking in Cedar Lake just after 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, he raced to the scene without hesitation. By the time he arrived, the vehicle was almost entirely submerged—its rear end dipping beneath the water’s surface and only the roof and a sliver of windshield remaining visible.
Peering through the driver’s side window, Daniels spotted a desperate movement: a small dog, paws clinging to the roof and muzzle just above the waterline, fighting to breathe in the shrinking pocket of air. Without a second thought, the twelve-year department veteran stripped off his jacket and dove into the lake’s frigid waters.
“It was instinct,” Daniels said. “I knew every second counted.” He swam to the passenger door, pried it open against the suction of the water, and gently lifted the terrified animal into his arms. The pup, later identified as an uninjured two-year-old terrier mix, remained quiet—its faith in this stranger apparent in its stillness.
As Daniels waded back to shore, a small crowd gathered on the embankment applauded and cheered. He offered only a humble shrug. “I didn’t do it for the applause,” he said, cradling the shivering dog in a dry blanket brought by a fellow officer. “I did it because it was the right thing to do. You’re safe now, buddy.”
The rescued dog, now named “Lucky” by Lakeview Animal Control, has been cleared by a local veterinarian and is available for adoption. Officer Daniels will receive the department’s Lifesaving Award next week in recognition of his bravery—and for proving that true heroes carry hearts as strong as their arms.
