From Well to Wild: Celebrating Murit’s 11th Rescueversary
July marks a truly special milestone: the 11th rescueversary of Murit, the once-fragile elephant calf who has grown into a strong, semi-wild bull living life on his own terms.
Murit’s story began in 2014, under tragic circumstances. Just a baby, he was rescued from a well—injured, dehydrated, and fighting for survival. His eyes were bloodied, his tiny body riddled with infection, and to make matters worse, he was in the middle of the painful teething process. The first six weeks of his time at the Nursery were touch and go, as he hovered between life and death.
But Murit is nothing if not a fighter.
Against all odds, he began to recover. Once his health stabilized, his personality began to shine. Gentle, polite, and endlessly playful, Murit quickly became a beloved member of the elephant family. His sunny disposition brought joy to keepers and fellow orphans alike.
In 2018, Murit took the next step in his journey and graduated to the Voi Reintegration Unit. There, he reunited with his Nursery companions—Mbegu, Godoma, Ndotto, Lasayen, and Ngilai—forming bonds that would carry him through the years.
And now, in 2025, Murit has taken the biggest step of all: returning to the wild. He roams freely, exploring the landscape as nature intended. Yet, true to his gentle soul, he still visits the Voi Unit, showing love and loyalty to the humans and orphans who shaped his life.
Murit’s journey is more than a rescue story—it’s a symbol of resilience, transformation, and hope. From a desperate calf trapped in a well to a free-roaming bull living among his peers, Murit reminds us that with care, compassion, and time, even the most broken beginnings can lead to wild and wonderful futures.
